End of La Robla Empty

Anyone who harbours ambition to ride one of the great European railway journeys over the Cordillera Cantabrica between Leon and Bilbao should make early plans now.

With the Spanish ecomomy, the dissolution of Feve and Feve's self mutilation of their own Leon terminus it is unlikely that the 200 mile route will survive in total. With one through train per day over the whole line, at a princely ticket price of about £14, the future looks very bleak.

Go now for an unforgettable narrow gauge experience. CGT tour anyone ?

Well that was quick. The daily single through Bilbao to Leon service is closed as from now and will run Friday and Sunday only.

Looks like La Robla will be two stumps, Bilbao to Balmesada and Leon to Cistierna and maybe Guardo.

I wonder if the Arija sand traffic that keeps the middle of the line open could be routed via RENFE at Metaporquera.

Patrick any more news on the demise of FEVE ?

This whole story is very sad and the demise of FEVE particularly.

There are similar problems on a much smaller 'scale' (but same gauge.... Smile ) with the Blanc-Argent, the last SNCF diesel run metre gauge line on French mainland.

We should try somehow and get some photo's before they all disappear.
