Probably brass U section or plastic!

It will in fact only be a cosmetic add-on to the upper module, all the detail and animation will be within the module itself for ease of transport, just planning ahead at this stage!

Cheers

A bit more progress today, the first of the polystyrene structures, the bridge piers and the supporting girders of the bridge, the main element of which will be a removable superstructure. (So even if Carl's loco's get bigger we can simply remove the top part)!!!!

An enjoyable project to watch evolving.

Thanks Daniel, I had thought of doing this, but it would hide too much of the valley and mine so .....

Remercie Daniel, j'avais pensé de faire ceci, mais il cacherait trop de la vallée et de mine si ....

I had a look in my garage and I have already got some nice girder bridge sides made from aluminium. I will take a pic later and you can see whether you want to use or modify them.
If so I will bring them to Railexpo. They are flat, light and easily carried.

That sounds excellent Carl.

How long are they? I have to span 50cm but anything longer than that would be brilliant!

Thanks

They are about 56 cm long and 12.5 cm high. They need a bit of cleaning up (previously on a garden railway somewhere....'Sad' )which I will do.
I can take strip the black paint off the aluminium if you wish.
The bottom rail is just a piece of hardwood which is screwed.
Construction otherwise is by small hex head bolts and can be dismantled easily enough.

Carl they look great and the perfect length.

Please don't bother to clean them up, painted and pre-weathered is just the look I'd be going for in any case.

I'll settle up with you in Paris, is there anything you need from this end of the country? - Cognac, Fois gras, Walnuts?

No settling up required. I'm just glad they'll be used.

That's tempting......but most importantly bring yourself and the steam engine.

Brian, thinking ahead to next year sometime and a potential link up with our modules.

Can you confirm the length of your two modules. I have them down as 1450 cm for the original and 120 cm for this new one.

Mine are 170 cm total plus I intend constructing very simple flat interface connecting modules with the portable layout. These will be 90 cm long (and 90 wide one end and 50 cm wide the porable layout end).
That will make a total length of 6150 cm (check my maths though...)
Plus the two 1 metre radius ends of the portbale layout will give a layout 8150 cm long x 230 cm wide.

March 22/23/24 2013 is scheduled for Ferrovi'art at Pointoise and I intend to present this project to the association TDS with a plan and some photos.

The combined layout will then be a mix of live steam, diesel and electric with a lot of animation. One side of layout will be scenic and the other just plain but probably loosely ballasted.

If we get time we can talk more at Railexpo.

Carl, I have also responded to your PM, March is in the diary cheers

My Cognac Module is only 139cm
My Mine Module is 120cm
Your Normandy modules are 170cm
Interface 1 is 90cm
Interface 2 is 50cm

Therefore total length of modules and interfaces 569cm

Plus two ends at 100cm each makes TOTAL LENGTH 769cm

I've been concentrating on the electrical and animation side of the project for the last few days. Building a transformer / control box from various scrap electrical components to power the LED lights and operate an "underground animation" to be revealed later...

An unbelievable piece of luck - bringing back the bridge structures donated by Carl from Paris and placing on the module they fit perfectly. Pure happenstance as I'd built the bridge piers before Carl even mentioned that he had them.

However now with due deference to Tram 47, I will now fit them as "under girders" as Daniel suggested!

Now we have a booking at Ferrovi'art for Carls'and my modules, I've resurrected the project and have been carving polystyrene for the rock walls. Statically charged polystyrene globules and debris are not good for my camera so I'll take some pics tomorrow, once the dust has settled!

Oh alright I'll come clean, I'm teasing you, I know you're searching for the perfect louvres Basketball

The aluminium (not zinc) bonnet is actually a heat sink component stripped out of an old French car radio. I've a box full of useful aluminium heat sink sections, but the minute I laid eyes on these I knew what I was going to use them for!

On a serious note, I did see an article many years back (in Railway Modeller I think) on how to make louvres and I plan to have a go for my live diesel body. Basically the process invoved making a negative mould in wood for a single louvre, making the vertical slit with a dremel and laying the THIN brass sheet over the mould and punching the indent with a chisel shaped tool which matches the mould of course. I've not tried it myself but reckon having a thin sheet would be key!
