Latest news from Ferrocarriles Espana Via Estrecha is that they are to build 2 new lines in Cantabria and Asturias.
First will be from Santander leaving the main line at Astillero and using parts of the track bed of the FC Astillero Ontenada, the Oconera steel company and also the incompleted broad gauge line of the Santander Mediterraneo and terminating at Salon.
Second will be an extension of the existing Feve line to Collanzo down the Aller valley.
Other major Feve works include a plan to extend a short branch into Santander airport, an extension of track beyond Santander Feve station into the resort area and the burying underground of the existing main line through Torrelevaga.
I am not sure why Feve is unique in having conditions that allow this kind of expansive approach but I rejoice in these plans and congratulate the organisation on having such a far sighted management. It also provides me with a good reason to return to Spain to travel on parts of the Feve network that I have not yet experienced.
