Heres another 'Non-railway but would make a great model` topic;

When I had my music shop in the 90's, Alembic was a very expensive make of bass guitar. Since moving to France it has a totally different meaning!
In most rural communities somebody has an alembic (or alambic) in their yard where you can take your apples,mirabelles, or any other fruit and have it converted into 'eau de vie', that pure spirit alcohol that is so warming on a winters day and the reason so many hunters in France should be avoided!
America has its moonshine, Ireland has its poteen (dont know about spain).

Anyway i'm looking for any info; old pics/postcards etc. A model of an alembic would not be out of place in any era; they havent changed much!!

Heres an example built in 1902 to distil cider into Calvados;

Here are two alembics photgraphed about five years ago in a neighbour's farm. They are still(!) in use. Distilling your own eau-de-vie from your own fruit - mainly apples - was very common in France. The stills were moved from farm to farm in the autumn. I think it was De Gaulle who banned it - part of the modernisation of France in the 60s. The compromise was that anyone doing could get a personal licence to continue - but that would be for their lifetime only. Now, the old man in the village died about ten years ago. One of his sons, however, may have been carrying on the family business. These two disappeared shortly after I photographed them. Lots of barns to hide them in, after all. Nothing was ever said. We still get a bottle of home made eau-de-vie each year. Best use is to create your own liqueur. Bottle a few whole oranges with eau-de-vie for a year or so and it's better than Cointreau!

All you need is a woodfired boiler, a still into which you put apples which have been steeped in water for while to allow them to produce alcohol by the action of the natural yeasts on them, and then run the steam through pipes inside the still.

I gather the trick is in the condensing bit: you have to make sure that what you get is the ethyl alcohol, not any of the other things that can be produced. But as much of rural France is still(!) populated, I guess that they know how to get it right. And it looks as though almost any model with the required bits could be passed off as prototypical!

Thats good enough to model from Phil! Thanks. We've just bought a new,bigger smoke machine for our gigs so i'm going to connect up the old one via underground tubes to the station, a house fire, and an alembic. Should look pretty spectacular!

Il vaut mieux se connecter à un alambic d'Armagnac !!!
les vapeurs n'en seront que plus parfumées !!!

It is more better to connect itself to a still of Armagnac!!!
The vapors will be only more perfumed!!!
