Can i use a household dimmer switch fitted in a wagon to control the speed of the battery powered trains?

Highly unlikely Mikey.

They are normally meant for controlling Alternating Current which behaves totally different to the Direct Current of batteries. As yet no one has invented an AC battery although it continues to do the rounds as an April fool's time 'new invention'.

C'est une methode moins cher pour controle la vitesse d'un locomotive
I was looking for a method less expensive to control the speed of a battery powered train.

A dimmer switch is a switch normally used to diminish the light in a room

il y a encore moins cher !!
un potentiomètre de 470 K. , une "puce" électronique type LM 317 , une résistance ,un condensateur 1000 microFarads, 2 diodes .

If you use a variable resistor Mikey there is a lot of power loss as heat, the expensive controllers use electronic wizardry so the battery will last a lot longer on each charge.

As Daniel said....

I think we've covered this before somewhere.

A transistor, pot, fixed resistor and a switch.

I have a simple circuit and can make one for less than a couple of euros if you want.

Yes please Carl. I've experimented with the vibrator (the electrics of course) but couldnt get it to work. I've got various batteries from 7.2 to 14v but they all make the train go just too fast/ I can repair guitar amps no prob, but trains? I looked on the net for a circuit but its double dutch to me!

That's a good circuit using one of the many voltage regulator chips that are widely available.

This was the article we did before (about the vibrator too....)

speed controller

The transistor circuit is there too. I will make one up Mikey and bring it to Chatellerault.

Unfortunately, transistors are a mystery to me, so I bodged together a diode speed controller a few years ago with 40V 4A doides, which are dirt cheap when you buy, say, a hundred. The controller has worked fine for the last three years. The connector block isn't really laziness Wink but its an easy way of playing with the settings. Having said that, I haven't touched them since I built it.....
I'm sure you could build something similar with a lot less diodes for battery control - I use them mainly as voltage reducers. They even work on DCC, wired back to back, to slow the trains as they go through station.
I'll stop rambling and go to work Dimmer switch? 9343
