This is an interesting picture for anyone modelling epoch 1, but what are the 'canisters' on the roof of each carriage? ( I am thinking they hold the oil for coach lights, but can anyone verify?

Here's a couple more old french postcards. I do hope I'm not boring anybody with these (as I apparently did on another forum!) I find them a fantastic source of inspiration for modelling; which brings me to another point. Do I want a model village that happens to have a railway on it or do i want a garden railway with a couple of buildings?

I guess a bit of both. I enjoy scratchbuilding buildings and I personally feel that if the buildings look french then it may be overlooked that my scratchbuilt coaches and wagons are not EXACTLY the dogs B*******s (whatever that is in french!!)

Keep the postcards coming. If they were boring people wouldn't buy them or send them in the first place.
A strong indication of narrowmindedness if someone says that rare historical material is boring.
Still..... each to their own little piece of balsa eh? Embarassed

And your buildings are the les 'tésticles de chien'. I said before they are 'pastiche'. When you put them together they create an atmospheric 3d picture of what you invisige.

I spent many nights lovingly creating the illuminated detailed interior of my station building. Ticket office, rooms, posters, maps etc. on the wall. If you are prepared to risk a double hernia peering through the now opaque windows you may just catch a tiny glimpse amongst the snails and spiders.
No need to do too much detail in garden!

Keep posting them Mikey - old photos always fascinate me anyway, the fact they are of a railway theme is a bonus!

The steam locomotive has to be a Pinguely but it's location is strange. By the 'N' on the buffer beam I would suggest it's CdN (Chemin de fer du Nord) in Brittany but the overhead in background would discount that. The only overhead on metre gauge in France is going to be down in the south - Grenoble, Isere perhaps, or bordering Switzerland I would believe. Interesting......

The railcar had me stumped for a moment as at first I thought it was a Billard 150D1 'porcinet' but a closer look shows that it is most likely a Verney/SCF A3 which as far as I know were used on the Chemin de fer du Tarn which befits the scenery in the picture too.

I need to get out in the garden more I know. What a Face

Are they filling up the tank with a hose perhaps because they do not usually have steam traction?

Did the guy take the picture because it was an unusual sight?

There looks to a number 8 on the opposite side of the buffer to the N

Is the Pinguely at Valmondois/MTVS? The Museum is right next to one of the electrified routes out of Paris...

Phil

It most certainly is Phil. Take a suburban train (train banlieu) from the Gare to nord (reseau nord ligne H).

It can also be accessed from the north-west via the line fromSerqueux/Gisors to Paris St Lazare and changing at Pontoise.

Also about an hours drive from me.

A very interesting museum with friendly people on a short remaining stub of the old CFD Oise network.
Loads of history attached to it and some great exhibits - Lulu being one of them.
On http://railtv.org/ showing this fortnight there is a some excellent film of the MTVS

Can anyone tell me more about these 'double-decker' wagons/carriages (Wissous). I've 'googled' but cant find any info. Just thought it would make an interesting scratchbuild.

Oh Mikey...I should have said really that these double deck coaches were properly called 'voiture imperiale' but they are also known as a 'Bidel' - even the modern ones.

Here are a couple of informative links,

If I didn't know better I'd think this picture was a wind-up! It looks like an old fifties 'blood and custard' carriage grafted on top of a much older one!
Would make an interesting scratchbuild or even kit-bash! Cheers

Interesting coach design - I imagine taking one of those round an R1 curve and keeping it upright might present challenges! I'd love to see someone have a go at bashing one though....

Well, it's been a while but here are some more old french railway postcards. Remember that in France postcard images enter the public domain after 70 years (mm 1939..takes us intoi the SNCF era);

That second picture is for me, St Gildas de Rhuys.

Pure metre gauge nostalgia. With the 'CM' on the front of the Pinguely (I think) tank loco I would say that's in Morbihan.

Never tired of pics like that.

Unmistakable metre gauge Corpet.

Senonches is in the Sarthe if I believe. Chartes-Alençon area.

What a great postcard with the 3 little girls along with everyone posing.

Notice the railway is by the road with a seperating line of trees in typical tramway style and a wagon full of hay or straw in the background.
