Well friends, where has the time gone? Difficult to believe, but nearly a year has passed since I last posted anything about progress on a figure... but we are here now, fear not!

Very recently I was asked by a forum member to provide a figure, loosely described as a French 'Fat Controller'... I will leave it to the individual concerned to decide whether or not he wants to make himself known to the rest of the forum.

Nothing really out of the ordinary with this one - apart from one thing: I need to try and make it look like an actual person, whose photo was provided to me today!

For a general outline of my intentions, and indeed the 'specifications':

1. Must have a red waistcoat (very important, apparently!)
2. Must have short, curly hair and half-rimmed glasses.
3. Must be a bit on the 'portly' side, and with a chubby, square-ish head
4. Must have a large, droopy moustache

For my own, I am adding:
5. Will be holding a pocket watch in one hand; the other, clenched in to a fist, will be planted on his hip in a somewhat accusatory pose - as though about to berate some hapless driver for daring to be a minute late.

I mentioned in another thread about my making an exhibition of myself at the Wickham show; which I duly did, and much fun it was too. During those fleeting moments when I wasn't talking punters' ears off, I was fettling away at a Preiser body with a view to making some progress on this latest commission. As you can see from the photo below, I didn't get very far!

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_1

The body is one of the German track-worker set, the head is from the seated passenger set. I thought the head was a pretty good approximation to start with. The comedy head-gear will be dremeled off and replaced with curly hair, and of course a moustache.

So, let's see how this progresses in the coming weeks!

Great to have the 'dismembers' back again.

I can't reveal exactly who the person is (going to be) but it (he) is not a forum member although he possibly looks in from time to time.
Anyone who goes to Railexpo may instantly know who we are talking a bout.

It's a mystery...it's a mystery..... Laughing

A bit more progress this weekend:

Firstly, pinning the arms and getting the pose right:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_2

Then straight in with the Milliput - just to hold everything together at this stage:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_3

Oh, and loose the hat brim whilst we are about it:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_4

This will have all week to dry and harden thoroughly, so we will see how it progresses then!

Starting to look great! Is it the Milliput Terracotta you use?
I use it for outside buildings (stone patterns) and it's brilliant stuff.

Thanks Paul, it is indeed Milliput Terracotta flavour - for no other reason than the colour contrasts well with the white plastic of the Preiser figure. It makes my mistakes more obvious to me!

A bit more progress today, in spite of the fact that my Dremel decided to give up the unequal struggle that is removing little bits of plastic The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) 411673

The last vestiges of the hat are now gone; I have also further reduced the size of the head so that when I get around to reapplying the hair, it won't look odd

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_5

Thereafter, I was able to to the 'bulking up':

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_6

I have to leave this to cure again before moving on to the next step, which will be to apply the layers of clothing.

A bit more work done in the week and this evening:

First, some hair, and a big old lip-warmer:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_7

Then the waistcoat:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_8

You can also just about see a bit of a belt, made from some very thin styrene strip.

I still need to make a shirt collar around his neck, and possibly a tie to go with that. Also, I need to give his sleeves the 'rolled up' look. There is also the small matter of some glasses... scratch but we are getting there.

Perhaps this is an idea: glasses made out of piece of thin wire.
You can use Humbrol Clearfix or a drip of whiteglue for glasses (dries up clear).

Thanks Paul, but I couldn't get your link to show me anything...

In any case, I have an idea of my own for some glasses (particularly the style that the gentleman in question is given to wearing), but I need to experiment first.

In the meantime, I have braved the cold of my garden to spray prime the figure:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_10

Thankfully the problem areas highlighted by the spray paint are mostly at the back - you don't need to see those, of course... needless to say they will be sorted in due course.

Well, the spec-ulation (see what I did there?) is over, because here's how he's going to look:

The Return of YAF - Le Controlleur Gros (or whatever 'Fat' is in French) CH_Conrtrolleur_gros_11

I think I need to make a slightly cleaner pair, but the idea is a sound one. In doing so, I found that I need a new prescription for myself, as even with my own varifocal lenses on it was very difficult to make this pair... must be my age!

I don't know the gentleman concerned, I only have a photo to work from. The glasses were indeed made from a narrow strip of very thin acetate; the sort of thing you get with 'blister pack' packaging. Once folded and painted, that's it: job done
