Hi

I do not know anything about 3.5 or 5 inch gauge locomotives but I am interested in applying my live diesel locomotive ideas to a larger 3.5 or 5 inch gauge loco (just for the crack) Very Happy

Firstly i need to get hold of a 0-4-0 chassis and I have actually found one on ebay which could be nicely converted.

Would love help and feedback from members who know anything about this and who could possibly help me in sourcing parts in the cheapest way possible...(mainly the chassis)

This is what i have found on ebay....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-GAUGE-ELECTRIC-DRIVEN-0-4-0-STEAM-LOCO-NEEDS-WORK-/200600447552?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item2eb4b7ea40#ht_500wt_715

I can see this having great potential if i can get my hands on it Very Happy

It's an idea that we talked about off and on but nothing has materialised at least for me. There are threads/posts in this section with some of the resourcing we did.
Although I now have the space, lack of time and money prohibit further foreseeable development. So it's not something I can really help with directly beyond this post.

I have a 30cc 2 stroke strimmer engine that would be suitable but that loco on e bay looks a bit dubious. Still could be worth bidding for I suppose, £15....mmm.....scratch

For 5 inch stuff there is a whole new world of discovery. geek

Try these 2 links for starters.

Good luck.

BTW, does that mean the end of your 32mm project?

Thank for this Carl.....Yes i was thinking of using a tiny 4 stroke strimmer engine or something simular...but i would really want the 4 stroke sound and i really want that loco on ebay...would be perfect for me to mess around with....

I am still very much completing my 32mm locos and will carry on with them indefinately but would love this as another project and there is the st albans engineering association with a 3.5 and 5 gauge track layout 5 minutes drive away from me in Chipperfield.

I wonder how much something like that loco would go for as I am on a limeted budget but hopefully i can get it last minute...we will see

So you were thinking of building a loco a while ago then?

Im just wondering whether this loco is a bit on the small side being 15 inches long buffer to buffer and 7 inches wide?

Taking into consideration that my Hymek is 18 inches long.....I think im going to build my own from scratch.

It should be fairly easy to build a chassis with some right angle steel....i just need to source some wheels or i could make them using a lathe....:/

What do you think?

I have found this video of a guy on youtube who has built something simlular to what i want to do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgB9qsEqpEc

I have just purchased a 4 stroke Suffolk iron engine and have started making the chassis. i have also purchased some 3 1/2 diameter aluminium round bar in 25mm length which i will make the wheels out of.

I now just need to find the right dc generator motor and then the motor to power the wheels. I am trying to found out what this guy has used and perhaps use similar ones.

I will add photos shortly...

Ive been researching places to run this loco when it is complete and interestignly ive found this club that has track for H0, 0, 1, 3.5", 5" and 7 1/2" gauges which is odd and would be a good place to show off both the smaller diesels and larger ones.

These pictures are of the scratch built chassis, the engine and the scratch built wheels which started out as 25mm 3 1/2 inch diameter aluminium round bar which has been turned using a lathe.

I plan to use a 24v 120 watt DC motor as the generator and a 36v 250watt as the traction motor.

I have been emailing a guy on youtube who has a very similar setup although he has used a little 2 stroke strimmer engine and im using a ATCO Suffolk 4 stroke.

I have purchased a centrifugal clutch for the engine, so that speed will definitely be controlled by engine RPM and at tick-over it wont want to creep forward.

I am using this loco as inspiration and body style...as mine will be rather large for a 5 gauge measuring 2ft 4 inch long and 1ft wide

This loco which i have found on ebay us using a very similar engine to my setup but it has mechanical drive. I would love to know how he manages to transfer all that torque that the motor will give off instantly to the drive wheels in order to get a smooth ride scratch

Good morning Anton, another interesting project going on here - something we probably all think about doing but never do. You are actually doing it.

My input : not knowing anything at all about these matters myself but here goes. Do you think the flanges on the wheels are deep enough ? I haven't a clue, it's just that they look a bit small, if the track is uneven won't it jump the rails ?

Hi Patrick.

Thank you for noticing that as I know very little about 5 inch rail as well. This is more of a 'put it all together and hope it wor
ks' kind of project. But I'm sure it will be okay as I have found someone on youtube who built something similar using a strimmer engine (videos above).

One concern I now have as someone else pointed out to me is that as the wheels are made of aluminium, they may not withstand the bashing they will get from the all metal, heavy constructed loco. What do you think? Smile

Anton

My attitude would be, in the short term leave them and see what happens, I guess the flanges will wear first, I think flanged wheels need to have a "taper" in order to self centre on the track. You already mentioned the trouble you had turning the alloy ones so I guess that a taper would be real hard work. But like I said - I know nothing really.

Anton,

I do know a little about locomotive wheels. My father was head of "shop" when we were living in Bulawayo and when we moved to Derby I got to watch him at work on Saturday Mornings (which was HIGHLY illegal!!!)

There are TWO profiles.

The first one is called the "english" profile and the other is normally referred to as the "colonial" profile.

I want to build a Live Diesel for 3.5 or 5 inch gauge Neree1pic70

The english profile is the one normally used nowadays -the colonial one was developed for roughly laid track work. It has the advantage of being able to slice through items that fell onto or died on the track... The axe flange of the colonial wheel is a poor steerer though -it is however very strong.

There is nothing wrong with having deep flanges -but you might want to taper them and cone the wheel if you get too much "squealing" during cornering. Otherwise just leave them as they are.

regards

ralph

I Ralph, thank you for your input on that, as im sure it will become very useful to me when i test it out. I am a bit worried about the size of the flanges at the moment as a heavy loco jumping of the rails on a raised track could cause a bit of a disaster, as it could pull me and anyone else off with it. affraid

The wheels are tapered slightly, so in theory they should self centre, very slightly.

Ive been in contact with two guys on youtube who have made petrol powered 5 inch locomotives. The guy whose videos have already been posted on here uses a 2stroke strimmer engine connected a 24v 120 watt generator motor powering a 36v 250 watt traction motor. Now i was going use the same, and then realised his strimmer would have a far greater RPM then my 75cc 4stroke suffolk engine, but far less torque.

I then got talking to another guy who made a petrol mechanical drive 5 inch locomotive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iekNyl2Apng&feature=channel_video_title

We talked about the set up i planned to use and the RPM of the suffok, as his loco uses one as well and we came to this conclusion:

The generator which will still be a 24v motor but it will have a high wattage> 24v 500 watt, or even higher if i can find one. Then the traction motor will be 36v motor and we are trying to determine the wattage. 36v>250w or 300 or so watt or maybe even 400/450watt for the traction motor.

Ive found out that 750 watts of electric motor is near equal to 1 horsepower, and the suffolk 75cc is about 1 horsepower, so it will be interesting to see if this loco works and how much it can pull.

If anyone can help me further with watts, then please let me know I want to build a Live Diesel for 3.5 or 5 inch gauge 833270

Having just finished my first year at university, and now having a little time on my hands before i go to america for my second year to complete my commercial license.

So i am back at home and continuing work on the hopefully soon to be, 5 inch gauge petrol-electric locomotive.

So/ here are some more pictures of the progress so far and what i have got upto...

Finally, i have the chassis all bolted together and it runs freely very nicely along the piece of test track.

I now have focused on the engine, which is a Suffolk punch 75cc four stroke. Now this is where i am stuck, as the engine seems to not want to start. It has compression, a spark, brand new spark plug, new fuel, but it wont start. Does anyone know anything about these mower engines?

I think he means he found it unbelievable an Englishman is having trouble with a lawn mower, as England is beeing the nation known for its lawns. Smile

I found an old operating manual of the Suffolk Punch lawnmower in PDF format that can be helpfull, see 'failure to start' on page 6: http://www.oldlawnmowerclub.co.uk/sites/default/files/opmanual/Suffolk%20Punch.pdf

Or else perhaps ask some advice on the site www.oldlawnmowerclub.co.uk that has a technical help section also. What fuel did you use?

He's taken aback that an englishman is having trouble with a lawn mower.

Clearly Tram47 has never owned a Suffolk Colt, and discovered how temperamental they can be. I seem to remember that theres either a choke or a priming thingy - what I do remember is that they will flood if they don't start almost straightaway, so don't spend too long at once trying to start it.
