I had no idea color photography existed way back then. Color photos from WW2 are somewhat rare; I never imagined color photos of WW1 even existed. Great find, Mikey.

It did not exist and indeed color photography did start from mid 40's last century.
Pictures prior to this were colored in B&W pictures and the reprinted.

Color pictures existed, but not as color film as you know, but as an "autochrome".
An autochrome was on a glass for the base, with some color pigment on top and varnish over it and a photo sensitive layer.
It was invented 10 years before WW1.

Here another link more related to building.
There 's some interesting pictures.

Excellent link and photos. This is a topical subject at the moment and the BBC are running an interesting article about tunnelling in WW1

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13630203

The header in Mikey's link page does give credit to the Lumiere brothers who indeed invented the first commercial colour (plate) process before WW1. Indeed the French had a big roll in colour photography long before that Kodak chappie..! Laughing

For the record, the Kodak chappie's name was George Eastman. Good pun, though.

I found some more WWI (and earlier) vintage autochrome images here:
http://www.tournassoud.org/en/photo/militaire.php

I especially like this one - he would be a great character to model:
http://www.tournassoud.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3373&g2_serialNumber=5&g2_GALLERYSID=TMP_SESSION_ID_DI_NOISSES_PMT
"Capitaine Moog 4eme Saphis"

Here he is again with some compatriots:
http://www.tournassoud.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3372&g2_serialNumber=5&g2_GALLERYSID=TMP_SESSION_ID_DI_NOISSES_PMT

The site has many other photographs atttributed to Jean-Baptist Tournassoud.

I also found this site related to the Albert Kahn collection housed in a Paris suburb:
http://www.albertkahn.co.uk/
It contains some WWI images as well.
