I received an email from Lorenz Schug today with photos of the factory sample of the 0-4-0 Decauville, which I will try to copy onto the forum. Here´s the text and the contact details. The website still carries pics of the original prototype, not of the model, but I assume this will be updated soon. This Decauville model has been a number of years in gestation and I´m looking forward to it going into production ....

Hello

today our Decauville sample arrived, here the first pictures. The loco has sprung axles, cylinder with D-valve, waterglass, lubricator with drain, sprung couplers and so on.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / With kind regards,

Lorenz Schug

I too had the e mail from Lorenz Schug as I had expressed an interest in buying one of these.
Although I prefer the 030 version.

Nice locomotive but I think the price is going to be quite high.

To be honest I would much rather he have commisoned a close-coupled metre gauge 030, Corpet, Pinguely, Piguet......We're crying out for one of these!

However the Decauville is French and famous. Very Happy

Judging by the fact that he first talked about the Decauville in 2009, I´m not holding my breath.

Slide valves, working valve gear,r/c for the gas valve, ( and self acting cylinder drain valves ?) .... nice ! As you say its probably expensive, but quite sophisticated all the same.

I saw the real Decauville 0-6-0 version in the Somme on the Michael Portillo Continental Rail Journey DVD last night. Nice little engine. I wondering whether Lorenz Schug is going to produce that one as well. It´s still up on his website.

Some of us had to make do with a stationary Chaloner and an equally unmovable Mountaineer (missing boiler certificate) at the Peterborough show.

That's an interesting point about boiler certificates.
Are they now mandatory for exhibiting in the U.K.?

As far as I am aware - and I have asked organisers at shows here there is no requirement in France. Well I have never been asked to provide any.

...although they are very concerned about fire retardent curtains!

In this case, Mountaineer was the 1:1 scale version, on loan from the Ffest. which currently can´t run because its 1:1 boiler certificate had expired, and there were no funds to get it refitted.
Concerning garden rail scale, in the UK, apparently, there is no legal requirement, but the associations and clubs provide testing facilities. If you´re running at an association event, then they have insurance that covers all but the most catastrophic of accidents.
But there´s just been a polemic about this in the Garden Rail magazine´s editorial spot, complaining about the Model Engineer Clubs now setting the bar too high (no pun intended), as the 7 1/4 inch boys got to write the standards, leaving the Gauge 1 and 16mm trying to interpret what it all meant for them.
No flame-retardent curtains on the K&NWLR, I can tell you.

....Ah....that makes sense. Wink

There are European regulations for 'small scale pressure vessels' but I can't find them now and I seem to recall copius diatribe (that I was probably party too... Rolling Eyes ) on other past forums.

For ride on stuff I remember that the regulations are somewhat different and shouldn't impact on our mini 'low' pressure models.

There are testing facilities here in France with associations such as:

Neat little model, I was lucky enough to get some pics of a real one ("Barbouilleur") at Amberley back in 2002 - good grief, where did that time go??

... and again in 2004...

I understand it became a static exhibit there, on expiry of its boiler certificate, back in 2007.

I got this follow-up mail today from Lorenz Schug:

"The interest in the Decauville is greater than I had expected. It was originally conceived as a cheap stop-gap (locomotive) between my Saxon projects but it has developed into a full-blown model with all the works. Not a great deal is left of the original specification, and I have now to recalculate the project from scratch. Price and delivery date will follow shortly. I will post a few photos on Facebook tomorrow and a Youtube clip of this afternoon´s (steaming)."

The 16mm group project loco kit Victory, is a similar Decauville, in 0-4-2 guise.

It is in kit form as a brass etch with a roundhouse chassis. Should be available any day now and will maybe cost around £550 to £700.

I was having a look at the Victory original last night and was wondering whether the 16mm project was inspired.
There´s also a German one-man-show H.D. Clemens / HDC-Dampf.de who produces a 0-4-2 Decauville, which looks very similar. I bought one at a quite reasonable price and hope to get it to steam too, one day Rolling Eyes

If you go back to my last video with moving pictures, you´ll see a little 0-4-0 (020T) Decauville at the end of the film. Well, I also managed to get the 0-4-2 shown on the website - both are in maintenance at the moment, but I hope to have them running properly soon.

And guess what.......

There was actually a 020 Decauville with a tender. I found a pic on PME about a railway near Dijon
See this link:
Decauville 020

Which is probably what inspired Regner to produce 'Hanna' with a tender.

"Hello Brian,
not at the moment, I am waiting on a new quote because it is a complete construction and differnt from what I first liked to offer. I will keep you updated."

Here is a copy of the mail that arrived early this morning from Lorenz Schug:

Hello,

first I want to thank you for your interst on my Decauville
projects after this long time of waiting. The clip is not perfect but Steven
Spielberg had no time to do this job. More clips and pics will follow in the
next weeks on my youtube and facebook channels. Over the weekend I got the
actual quotes for 50 units of the new version. The pre-sale price until
10.06.2013 is 1490,- Euro, then the regular MSRP is 1590,- Euro. All prices
include 19% VAT. Please note that I need to take a deposit of 500,- Euro after
receiving your order. The production can be finished about 4 month after
starting the production, so it is up to you how fast you can get it.

That's a pretty hefty price for a very simple and basic Accucraft.

I might have a bash at building one on a Ragleth power unit!
