My Sick Corpet...

Evening all

I rather than continue to hijack Brian's thread, I thought instead that I would start a separate one on my sick Corpet. I did a bit of exploratory surgery this evening, and here to try and clarify the issue, are some pics:

1. Chassis separated from body shell (are the motors still this size in the modern versions?):



2. With the protective plate and the motor can removed, the problematic component is revealed. It's the big nylon cog in the middle of the pic. The patches of green are the remnants of my half-assed attempt at a repair - it's Green Stuff:



3. Some measurements. The pitch looks to be about an 8th of an inch in old money:





4. The worm gear measured:



So. has anyone got anything in their spares box(es) that might be a suitable replacement. The upside is, removing it seems to be fairly straight forward, as it's not actually on the axle as I'd originally thought. Instead, it meshes with the rack cog that is on the axle.

I'm looking....

Cant sleep - newbiz pitch later today - so on my favourite website . Had same problem with Bachmann gear box (Bachmann sent me a new one so that's being solved) but Brian gave me catatlogue from L'Octant - French supplier of model parts incl. gears. Dont have it to hand but maybe he can provide details. Will look for it later today.

sory clive, but your"corpets" been modifiyed from a normale corpet, the motor should fit in side the motor block,not sat on top, are you sure its a corpet motor block? you mention a rack gear, dose this gear go throught the base off the motor block? could it be you have a rack loco motor block?

Mike, yes the rack cog is visible underneath the motor block - I took a pic of that but didn't upload it!

I had my suspicions about its origins for a long time. The sad thing is, when it was running, it was my most reliable loco - slow moving even at highest setting on the control (possibly a characteristic of rack locos, now I think about it), but it could pull a huge number of wagons without even blinking.

What did for it eventually was getting caught by a low-overhanging 'branch' where it stayed for about an hour before I realised what had happened (I was entertaining family at the time). By that time, it was too late... The gear was stripped, and some impressive gouges on the rail surface.

ha makes sensce now, the motor should be vertical, its held in plasce originally by 2 screws through the top off the gearboxs, u can see the mounting holes been cut up at some point in clives photos, i think you will need to ask for the idiealer gear for a bananburge steam rack loco, and the rack cog.. sorry clive ive nothing like that, to be honest, i think you might be better to fit the corect motor block, as its possable to slip the gears as it is..

Presumably not all LGB Corpets are fitted with oversize vertical Buhler motors?

I'm loathe to start dismantling mine to look!

Until this post I hadn't realised there was a rack version Corpet loco - would love more details please!

Or has someone converted Clive's to rack operation with a gearbox from another model? Hence the switch to a horizontal mounting and the gear problems that followed?

Good spot, Mike, thanks - now that it's been pointed out to me, it all seems obvious now! I've had a look for people selling idler gears for ballenberg locos - guess what... zip.

Brian, I think this was a mod undertaken by GRS a number of years ago, The sticker on the underside of the loco shows the phone number as it would have been, pre '01-' days

To be fair the gear problem was entirely of my making - up to the point where it got snagged in some branches, it ran very smoothly, with a very impressive tractive effort.

all the corpets, unless modsifyed,(by the owner) use a standered 3 axle "D" type gear boxs,with a lgb standard short shaft twin worm buller motor(same motor in a stanzes, about £30), with the 1st, and last axles powered by the motor,via gears mounted on the wheel sets, middle axle floats, all axles have bullet type pick ups..there are slight, very slight vairaiations, but youd have to be a snobto be bothered,ie, slight changes to some moulding on the lids off "D" gaer boxes, 1 with 3 pins.. some are chiped(mts) as standard.. some with smoke units, some with out.intrestingly its very easy to swap cabs over..mavise my black one, has a green cab swaped over..
this is what your red corpet should have clive, one ive fixed for roy peddler..

Looking at the other Corpet pics on Brian's thread, the wheel arrangement is totally different to mine. On mine, there are 2 pairs of pickup skates, and a lot of the valvegear has gone astray!

Funny it's only taken me 3 years or more and some outside expertise to realise this, but I now think I have been blessed with:

a Corpet body shell on a custom brass base plate, with a rack loco motor block (with a stripped idler gear, it seems). Caveat emptor, I believe!

cracked it, its off a electic rack loco, sorry clive the valve gear through me,.. try chalk garden rail, i got spares for my yellow one, £15.00 per grear axle, about a month ago.. also theres a german company listing all the spares for it

I am performing at Wickham show tomorrow, I think we have Kent Garden Rail in attendance, so I shall enquire as to whether he has any of said items - in fact, I might take the loco with me to see if I can effect a repair whilst in a quiet moment! Failing that, I'll have a chat with the boys at Chalk, see what they say.

Don't forget, anyone seeing this who is going to the show, come and say hello to me. I will be the saddo sitting at a table on his own, whittling away at little lumps of white plastic!

Trust you're going to install a stretch of rack line? That's if you haven't got one already?

Certainly it has the look of what I am after, but it appears to be for a Rugen as opposed to a Ballenberg? I guess they could be the same

clive thats not the part you want. give me afew hours and i will get you the correct part number. as mike says the motor block you have is from the electric rack loco the one that looks like box on wheels. all internall gears are still available as parts but its a direct order item from lgb. dragon g scale should be able to help on ordering.i have a full set of gears waiting to be replaced. cost is about a £10 just a few weeks to arive. i will post some pictrues later of the gear.

I have a very big box of plastic gears but not anything exactly like that now I've seen it.

Hopefully Clive can get his 'Cambrai' Corpet repaired and running.

*Cambrai was the one working in the UK and made up of bits from other locomotives.
