The Gwili Railway

This is another of the many (thankfully) preserved lines in Wales, which we visited last year whilst on holiday in Brecon.

A very interesting railway that I visited a long while ago just after they opened Lyfan Cerrig in about 1988. At that time the (next) station at Cynwil Elfed was for sale.

Do you know anything about their planned projects? Very little is mentioned on the website.

The track bed exists well into the Brechfa forest and I wondered if they will ever get back to Camarthan

Carl, not much of substance on their website, as you say; apart from a single statement at the bottom of their main page:

"There are exciting times ahead as plans are in place to extend the Gwili Railway to the outskirts of Carmarthen – to a new terminus at the old Abergwili Junction. This was the point where the line to Llandeilo turned right and headed up the Towy valley."

Although, in recent weeks there was a comment on this very matter, on the National-Preservation.Com forum:

Thanks Clive, very interesting. I know they can never go all the way back to Camarthen (town) to connect with the BR line.

Any other preserved railway gems around?

I think several 'new' resurrections of old lines have taken place in North Wales in recent times - possibly Mr Holt can enlighten us further!

In terms of places I've been to, I have a backlog of pics to upload from holidays over the last couple of years, including the Brecon Mountain Railway, the Vale of Rheidol, and of course the Welshpool and Llanfair - all on my to-do list!

The Brecon Mountain Railway is well worth visiting on a dry day!! I worked on the Welshpool and Llanfair for many years and that is great also, living near the Llangollen Railway have you been there/ Les

I've not been to Llangollen, indeed there are quite a few railways I have yet to visit in the Wales area alone. I guess it's just a case of finding the time to do it - easier said than done with me, unfortunately.

Hi Clive I understand, I retired 23 years ago so I have time to do some things, last August I went mad and my son and I drove 3210 miles around Europe looking for trains, he is the driver and also in a wheelchair so it was a shame that some trains were no use for him, others were great and he enjoyed them, the Harz Mountains was some train ride also one of the trains outside of Interlaken. I still have some to do in the UK but try only to go if he can ride as well Les

Morning all yes Mikey I have many pics so will wait for son to come here and load them for you, I get in such a mess, it was a great trip and most folk were very good with Keith, some thought a wheel chair man could just get out and walk and climb into a train, on the Zell am Zee it ment about 2 foot!! The Rohorn was not on but the other on there was great. I went to Interlaken station and asked if he could get on after a min was told yes so off we went on the main line. Arriving at the station the train was in but we had to cross the main line with a drop of 2 ft. The carraiges were small and high so I thought we were stuck again. Asking the staff I was told the carrage was booked and he could cross the ramp at the end, by the time he had got over they had removed a side of a coach altered all the inside fiting and lifted him in. at thr top they lifted him out. Our thanks to them for giving us a great day. It also helped as our camper van had broken down here Les
