Very nice.

I've heard of this MOMI chap on VML. He has some interesting stock.

I might go actually. Very Happy
I could bring some locos and even my layout if they want....?

Rendez vous à.....= are you going to (meet at).

Rendre is a difficult word in French to translate precisely in English.
It can mean many things, pay, give back, bring, etc...

You have to translate the sense.

'Rendre', c'est un mot difficule à traduire exactement en Anglais. Il peut signifier plein choses, payer, redonner, rapporter, etc.. Il faut traduire le sens.

Rendre une visite = 'to visit' in English or perhaps 'pay a visit' often connected with people.
Visiter = 'to visit' in English for places like a museum.

Showing my ignorance here, but isn't passer more commonly used for visiting people rather than places ??? Or is that only referring to past events?

That's another false friend (faux ami), 'passer' with many, many different meanings.

an example,
Passer = to pass in the physical sense, also to spend time with someone or somewhere but not money.
It doesn't mean to pass (be successful) a test.

Again it's very difficult to precise these translations word for word - which is often what an online translator mostly tries to do.

It's the sense and picture that's important.

That's why I still have (for the near future ) a job teaching English to French people. cheers

I think it's "bring to" (amener) and "take to" (emmener) - so: "I'll take my trains" - telling e.g. the rest of us on CGT; vs. "I'll bring my trains" e.g., to the organisers; but seem quite interchangeable really

If you're driving, "passer" is driving past somewhere; passing another car (or overtaking, which is more English than passing, which is more US) is "doubler" in French.

"Passer le pont" is "to cross the bridge" ..As Carl says, context is everything!

Many of us on here do visit (and are members of) Voie Métrique Libre.

Very Happy

An interesting point of language...again. rabbit

Cooking.

In English we usually refer to cooking as traditional, home, etc.. or as in a canteen.

If we want to be classy about it we say 'cuisine' and a restaurant has a 'chef' not a cook.
But as Daniel noted, 'cuisine' = kitchen

In French many people say the word cooker for 'cuisnier' thinking it means someone who cooks.
Logical I suppose if you think bake, bakes, baker.

So.... Je fais la cuisine can mean, I do the cooking or I am doing the kitchen (building/fitting it).

Strange language. Shocked

I think I'll go there.

Not sure about taking the layout as it too late really to organise.

But if there's space on MOMI I'll bring some equipment to run.

Is live steam okay...?

What is the French regulation of 11 September 2001 regarding steam engines?
This is quite important if people are travelling internationally.

I know they won't let you on a plane with a live steam engine unless you have an engineer's certificate to say that it has been purged and is incapable of being charged. In other words it has to be dismantled.
Eurostar and the Tunnel are okay as long as you tell them you are carrying gas.
You will have to get the locomotive(s) out and show them so be prepared for a long delay while they all gather round amusingly,

The only directives I am really aware of are the ones concerning pressure equipment.
Principally EC directive 97/23

There are other French regulations tied in in with this.
See:
CAV information

It is otherwise up to local exhibition organisers and the fire/emergency (pompiers) who decide whether they will allow it at a particular venue which I have to say is getting less and less here.
That is often because of modern fire control systems. Butane vapeur alone can affect sensors as I found out once in Lille.

Individual 3rd party liability issurance is an obligation for anyone exhibiting. This is usually provided through household insurance cover and you can get a written 'attestation' from the insurance company.
