The big day is tomorrow (Wednesday) thanks Mikey.

I go in early at 07.15 and they will operate before lunch. It's likely I'll be in for the night and crawl out on Thursday although there is an apparent tendacy to kick you the same day if you can hobble and pee.

The surgeon doesn't seem to bad and was keen to improve his English with humour when I visited.

They seem a bit more laid back than in Chelles and definitely less stressed than the NHS.

It's just the aftermath I hate,.... the so called recovery period.

I am back....Just about.Very Happy

1 day in hospital turned into 5.

When they opened me up under local anaesthestic for a 20 minute hernia op they found my appendix inflamed and stuck inside the hole. affraid

This then became a major piece of surgery that lasted about an hour. I was further sedated but still awake for the whole process.

Not a pleasant experience and I'm still suffering with headaches and extreme tiredness.
They only took me off the drip yesterday and started to 'feed' me.
4 days without proper food!

It'll be a while before I'm back to normal. Very Happy

Thanks chaps but I still have a problem and I may yet have to go back!

The eminent Clouzot-like anaesthesist convinced me on the day to have a spinal anaesthetic (rachianesthésie) - similar (but not the same) as the epidural given to women for childbirth.

I agreed against my better judgement as he said the recovery would be easier than for a 'general-put-you-sleep jobbie'.

Subsequently I have these migraine like headaches and on reading on the net I see that it is 'spinal headache' (céphalé rachidienne). This could be controversially caused by being poorly administered.

I told them in the few days after but of course it fell on deaf ears and nobody gave me any attention.
Difficult to do in the hazy, post operative stress period in a foreign language despite my comprehenisible French and surprisingly how few people wanted to speak English....

I am trying the strong caffeine and analgesic home treatment for 48 hours (which is helping at the moment) before contacting the doctor.

There are some really great things about the French health system and some....err less desirable things too. I shall list my observations separately for future reference.

That's going to be a while before I'm back on that pale
...and then it'll just be a light Cotes du Rhone or two.... Wink

....What I need right now is a good English breakfast with fat sausages, bacon, beans and some Marmite.

Good to hear you're on the road to recovery. It seems there are many "Clouseau" like professionals in France. We had one as our technical manager at the plant in Fos-sur-Mer. Of course there are many here in America as well, we just don't identify them with the beloved inspector.

Thanks Bill for the story but I was rather thinking of Clouzot the film director - he had a reputation for being a French 'Hitchcock' and had some pretty horrific films like Les Diaboliques.

Maybe I had too much of that Perfalgan they gave me afterwards..... cyclops

Oops. I just assumed the headaches had affected your spelling.

So does one drink red or white wine with an appendix? What a Face

Even my French wife didn't know who Clouzot was....
When I told her I just got a lesson in French pronunciation.
....and "Well if you said properly I would know who you meant"

Clouzot = Cloooozo - Clouseau = Cluezohw or something like that!
