My old friend Christian Wolmar has just produced his latest book - Blood Iron and Gold - with the modest subtitle "How the railways changed the world" Fitting the whole history of world railways into one book means leaving out a lot but if you want an overview of how the world we live in would not exist without railways - or to convince someone that an interest in railways is not some sort of fringe hobby - it is probably the best you'll ever get. Andrew Adonis (at the launch party last night) agreed. It's published by Atlantic Books and should be in shops next week.
